I first experienced Jane Austen’s novels in my early teens, and I immediately loved them. Initially I loved them for their romance. Later in life, I was especially drawn to their social commentary. More recently I am enjoying their humor, which can be LOL funny! Austen’s primary focus is on her characters themselves: the feelings they have, the bonds they form, the immediate details of their intimate lives. She is interested in who they are, not so much on what they do. And she captures the complexity of sisterhood, in all its moods and colors, better than any author I know.

I know I’m not alone in loving Miss Austen – at last check there are 76 movies listed on IMDB that are either adaptations of novels or stories about her life. (My personal favorite is the Bollywood-inspired Bride and Prejudice directed by Gurinder Chadha, but I also have a soft spot for Andrew Ahn’s Fire Island starring UTK alum Conrad Ricamora as Darcy.)  I think Jane Austen continues to be one of the most widely read English authors, because her books are, in many ways, revolutionary. They may be domestic stories about love, marriage, and social standing, but what they have to say about those topics was new in her time and is still deeply insightful today. Love, to Jane Austen, is desirable but never easy! Marriage can be a support, but it can also be a trap. Social standing is a double-edged sword. Nothing, in Austen’s world, is as clear cut or definitive as we might wish it to be – everything is nuanced. And yet, it is still full of joy, full of life, full of fun! Her stories never end with a universal “happily ever after”, but they do end with a sense that life is worth living.

~ Casey Sams

Jane Austen is undeniably one of the most influential authors of all time. She was born on December 16th, 1775 in Steventon, England and lived her whole life with close family. She began writing at the age of 11, and she completed her first full length novel by 1796, originally titled Elinor and Marianne, which would later be published as Sense and Sensibility anonymously, “by a Lady” in 1811.

As you might expect, she had several siblings, 6 brothers and 1 sister to be exact. Her sister Cassandra was her best friend, and the two were known for being very close. Cassandra was three years older than Jane and she is sometimes thought to be the inspiration behind Elinor Dashwood. Though they were both proposed to, neither of them ever married, and they carried out their days together in their house in Chawton, England until Jane’s death. She died on July 18th, 1817 at the age of 41 of an unconfirmed, long-term illness, commonly speculated to be Addison’s disease or lymphoma.

In 2024, Forbes named her as the 6th most influential writer of all time on a list of 101 writers which included playwrights, poets, and nonfiction writers from Aristotle to successful modern day writers. She wrote 6 complete novels by the time of her death, and her works inspired over 80 adaptations across film, television, and theatre, not including the countless literary adaptations and books that have been heavily inspired by her works.

Jane Austen published anonymously her whole life, and only after her death were any of her works published with her name explicitly on the work, when her family posthumously published Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

If a woman’s writing, and by extension her deeply personal thoughts, were to be publicly known, they would be easily opened up for public scrutiny and even ridicule. Publishing anonymously therefore could protect the female author from judgement and serious social rejection while still sharing the female perspective with readers across the country (and eventually the world).

Though she published under pseudonyms like “By A Lady”, Jane Austen’s identity as the author of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and other novels during her lifetime was no secret to her friends or family. In fact, she was quite admired for her work by her extended family, including her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh, who wrote the only first-hand account biography of Jane Austen.
