Dear Clarence Brown Community,
I’m thrilled to bring an amazing group of actors from New York City to lead this UT Knoxville production. The combination of professionals, local community hires, and UT Knoxville students produced incredible electricity on stage. While this is my second time bringing Kinky Boots to Knoxville, this time feels really special because it is happening at the Clarence Brown Theatre, where I started my acting career. I was so honored to receive the 2018 CBT Artistic Achievement Award for my work on Broadway and around the globe. It feels right to give some magic back to the CBT and Knoxville Arts community. I hope to bring more shows to CBT in the future.
Every production I do of Kinky Boots is special because of the show’s message of acceptance and inclusion. But to be a part of this show here in Tennessee and in my hometown brings a new urgency. I hope that the audience will take away a welcoming heart and most importantly an open mind. We are all the same and our differences should be celebrated and embraced.
I want to leave you all with a direct quote from Cyndi Lauper’s lyrics:
1. Pursue the truth.
2. Learn something new.
3. Accept yourself and you’ll accept others too.
4. Let love shine.
5. Let pride be your guide.
6. YOU CHANGE THE WORLD WHEN YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND!
Thank you for sharing in our production.

Donya Walker-Bacon (Interpreter) Donya has worked as an educational interpreter with Knox County Schools for over ten years. This is Donya’s second show as an interpreter with Clarence Brown Theatre, but she is no stranger to the stage. She has performed in several shows such as Dream Girls, Annie, and Hairspray, to name a few. She is also a Choreographer at the Knoxville Children’s theatre and has choreographed a few shows with Knoxville’s very own Carpet Bag Theatre. Donya is excited to be able to partner with her former professor and experience the theatre from a slightly different point of view.
